Jewel: "I Plan To Breastfeed, But It's Every Woman's Choice"

She’s a singer, songwriter, actress, poet, painter, philanthropist and soon-to-be mom.

Jewel and husband, World Champion bull-riding superstar Ty Murray, are expecting their first child – a boy – in early July. The Foolish Games singer opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her “easy” pregnancy, partnering with Libby’s to help remake their classic jingle, her goal to be “flexible” with her birth plan and her upcoming children’s album that she wrote for her baby on the way.

The 36-year-old songstress says her pregnancy has been going well. “I’m due in early July. I’ve been feeling really good,” she says. “I’ve had an easy pregnancy.”

But don’t expect the soulful singer to get on any kind of soapbox now that she’s expecting for the first time.

I plan to breastfeed, but it’s every woman’s choice.” Jewel says, “I feel that people can get up in arms about it and it’s funny what a hot-button topic it is. I don’t think people should judge each other. Each woman does what she feels she can do. I was farm-raised so I think it’s important, but that’s just me and I don’t mind if other people don’t.”

Jewel says she and babe are just fine after her recent car crash. “We walked out without a scratch,” the mom-to-be says. “I definitely think the car did a good job of taking on the impact. A firetruck ran a stop sign and T-boned me.”

The Grammy Award-winning singer says she and Ty hope for “a healthy baby,” and there’s no pressure to follow in mom or dad’s cowboy boots. “They have their own little agenda, we don’t. So whatever he wants to grow up to be, we hope to support.”

While they haven’t decided on a baby name yet, Jewel says, “We’ll figure it out.”And although she’s “definitely” reading all the books, she’s showing no signs of first-time mommy nerves and plans to keep her options open for the birth.

My goal is to be flexible. I’ve noticed when women get really rigid about it, you can’t control how everything goes. I’m prepared as much as I can and we’ll see when I get in there,” she says.

Just because she’s about to enter motherhood, don’t expect her to leave the music scene any day soon.

“I just wrote a record for my baby,” Jewel says. “I did one while I was trying to get pregnant called Lullaby. I released it independently. It’s just really soothing and hopefully really pretty music. I’ve gotten a great response from fans.” Jewel adds, ” They say it really works for their babies. I can’t wait to try it out on my own. I have a lot of adult fans who don’t have kids who say they use it to help calm them down at night or when they’re in traffic hour.”

And watch for her upcoming children’s album that will be released this fall.

I just wrote a brand new record,” she says. “I’m just about done producing it. It will come out in the fall. It’s a children’s album. I wanted to write a kid’s album for my baby that I thought he would enjoy as he grows up and has different developmental stages.”

Jewel goes on to describe the album she wrote for her son.

“When he’s a really little guy in diapers he can bop around to the tracks and then as he grows, he can get into the story-telling and the lyrics,” she says. “I also wanted it to be a record that the parents could enjoy. I’ve listened to a lot of records and they’re pretty hard to get through. So I used ‘Rocky Raccoon’ by The Beatles as a template. It’s a really clever and cute song that I loved long before I had children. I think kids will like it too because it’s such a good story. So I tried to write story-telling songs that are still clever but well-produced pop songs. I hope people like it. It’s called the Merry Goes Round and it’s out in the fall,” she says.

The songstress goes on to talk about partnering with Libby’s for a great new contest.

“We’re running a contest to re-recorde the Libby’s iconic jingle. It’s amazing, it’s been around since the ’70s. We’re going to let America take a stab at re-recording it. The first prize is $10,000 which is pretty great. All the details are on their Facebook page.” She adds, “I’ll be judging it so I’ll pick the top 5 finalists and then America will vote. I look forward to hearing everyone’s creativity on it.”

The mom-to-be talks about partnering with Libby’s and the importance of the family table.

Libby’s is high quality food that you can count on for vegetables and fruits,” she says. “I’m one of those people, as does Libby’s, who believes in the importance of the family table. There’s a lot of research showing that kids do better in school and have better self esteem if you eat a meal together. In our busy lives, we don’t have time to cook gourmet 4-hour meals as much as we’d like to. So pre-cut, canned vegetables are healthy options that help you spend less time cooking and more time eating together.”

Will she wrangle her little cowboy on the road for a tour any day soon?

“I’ll be on mommy-duty for a while I think,” she says. “I hope to be able to always sing, but at the time, we’ll just have to see what feels right.”
