Noteworthy: On May 16th, 2011, the US Senate voted to maintain tax subsidies amounting to $2 billion a year for 5 multinational oil companies. In effect voting down a resolution that would have taken away the subsidies and would have helped pay down our national debt by close to $20 billion over the next 10 years.

On May 12, 2011, the National Research Council of the National Academies, the preeminent non-partisan scientific institution, chartered by Congress to advice our countries law makers on advancing the US response to Climate Change issued it’s latest report. The report stated unequivocally that: “Climate change is occurring and the environmental, economic, and humanitarian risks posed by climate change indicate a pressing need for substantial action to limit the magnitude of climate change and to prepare for adapting to its impacts. ” The report was prepared at the request of Congress, and goes on to conclude that “the risks of inaction far outweigh the risks or disadvantages of action”, and that the most sensible and urgently need action is to “put a rising price on carbon emissions, by means of a tax or cap and trade” system.

Is it just me? Check in with the kids in your life and ask them what they think. At the same time as our Senators are giving fossil fuel producing companies taxes breaks and subsidies to find and produce more carbon producing products, our countries most eminent scientists are telling us we need to TAX these products (oil, gas and coal) and stop their production as they are “endangering the world.”

Ask your Senator and Congressman the next time you see them what they are going to tell their future grandchildren or their current ones when they ask them: “What did you do, when you had the power and were asked by scientists to do all you could to encourage a shift away from fossil fuels and find incentives to encourage innovation and development of renewable, non polluting energy sources?”

Politics only, with no basis on science or facts…at the expense of all of us.
