Labor Day Celebrations

Photobucket

This coming weekend, Monday included, is Labor Day weekend. It started as a salute to labor and work ethic in the U.S., but has morphed into the unofficial last gasp of the summer season. It’s really a potpourri of activities more in keeping with the simple celebrations. Today, kids go back to school in many cases before Labor Day. When I was young, everyone went back to school the day after Labor Day. So even though it doesn’t have exactly the same significance, it does mean summer vacation is over. The method of celebration is somewhat diverse and I have tried to list a selection of them here. Now some may not say “Labor Day” festival specifically but they are well known to take place every year on this weekend, and therefore are Labor Day activities by default. You can spend the time at Taste of Colorado in Denver or a Stickball Tournament in San Diego, a Moonpie Contest in McCalla, AL or walking across the Mackinac Bridge in Saint Ignace, MI on the only day of the year it is open to pedestrian traffic. I listed a few of these and several others for you to visit. If there isn’t anything here in your backyard, please use the search box to find some fun things to do this holiday weekend!
