Again, It Never Ends!

Here’s another of these crazy stories a customer told me today. He was driving in the city and as he came around a corner a passerby points to bottom of the car and says there’s smoke coming out. He immediately pulls over and gets out of the car and doesn’t see anything but lo and behold, there’s a guy coming with a mechanic shirt on. The “mechanic” comes over and says, “I must be your guardian angel, look at this, it’s dripping antifreeze and I can fix it right here”.  My customer, Tom, asks him the price and he tells him  it’s going to cost $280 and “You must have gone over a pothole and loosened the pins in your radiator.”

(Huh? Pins in the radiator, that’s a new one, and I guess all “radiator pin replacement” costs $280?)

He proceeded to act like he was fixing something and then sent Tom out to get a gallon of water to refill the radiator. (I’m sure during Tom’s absence he went through the things in his car but I’m probably just being cynical for no good reason…..).

Miracle of all miracles he’s able to fix it right there and demands $280. Now Tom isn’t a complete fool (only a partial) and he at least negotiated him down to $100, which of course he dutifully hands over, in cash, right then and there. The best part of this story is that Tom came here fully believing that this guy helped him and wanted to make sure that he did a good job. When we explained to him that there are no such pins to replace and that his car hadn’t been repaired in any way, he was a little shocked.

This is another one of situations that continually amaze me since Tom is very long term customer of ours. I would have thought that at the very least, while this was happening, he would have pulled out his phone and called us to ask for advice.

This just goes into that category of: If something smells a little off, DON’T EAT IT!
