Winter’s coming, so the inevitable “winter car tips” articles will be written.
I really don’t want to bore you with another one of those and frankly, I’d just
like to ignore that winter is coming. Unfortunately I’m stuck having to subject
myself, yet again. I guess I might as well remind you of what you need to
do to make sure your vehicle makes it through.
The MOST important thing you can do is to make sure your radiator has the
correct amount of antifreeze and will take you down to 34 below (kill me now
if I even have to think about being in anything that cold) but some of you do,
so make sure wherever you are that your antifreeze is correct. Also, make sure
that all your fluids are full which should be taken care of during your oil changes.
Depending on where you live, you might want to put on winter wiper blades if you’re in a heavy snow area like Buffalo. NY. I highly recommend the good ones, they’re expensive but they really help when there’s a lot of snow.
You should also have your tires checked to make sure the tread is good, nothing
worse than getting stuck in the snow. Even with good treads sometimes the best tire in the world can’t help you with that.
That’s pretty much it for winter specific things. Oh they’ll give you some long list
of “must do’s” but it’s mostly a way for them to milk some money out of you.
Now of course you want to bring the car in for it’s regular checkups because
nothing sucks more than being stuck when it’s 15 degrees, but you don’t need
to have me tell you this.
So bring the car in before winter and you should be good to go.
