Not My Fathers’ RV

The holidays ended a little over a week ago and already some people are getting cabin fever. I don’t really get cabin fever too often because I love the winter but then again I am a little goofy. However it might not be too early for people who live in places where it has been snowing and pretty cold for quite a while already.  That explains the influx of the indoor type events that we see in January and February. As the event schedule welcomes it’s two coldest months, dreams of warm weather activities abound even as the cold winter winds blow. Over the next few weeks we will feature a wide selection of just such shows; home shows, flower shows, boat shows, sportsman shows, etc. All types of shows that try to get our minds off of the cold weather and on to the fun times outdoors. This week we feature RV shows.

When I was young (Otherwise known as “When dinosaurs roomed the earth”) RV’s were more like campers. They were somewhat limited is size, especially width. They had tiny kitchens and something resembling a closet I was told was a bathroom. The kitchen table was the built-in type and doubled as a bed at night. Having been a Girl Scout, who when camping was sleeping in sleeping bags on the ground, camping in one of those was like staying in a hotel. I thought that they were the best thing ever. And at that time they were. But times have changed and the RV’s of today are design marvels. If you have not seen the RV’s of today, you have no idea what you are missing. Now granted, life on the road is not for everyone but even those among us who are homebodies will not fail to be impressed by these amazing vehicles. They have everything that you have at home including satellite radio, TV and Internet, gourmet kitchens, big screen TV’s and so much more; all the comforts of home at a comfortable 50 miles an hour.

And for all you former empty nesters who have family members who came back home for a few months and are now living in their old bedrooms, the shows this week can actually work rather well for all of you. You know those family members, we call themselves sons and daughters. Well pack the kiddies into the car and say you are going house hunting. And then head to an RV show. (don’t mention that destination until you are well on your way) You can start by saying that you have been kicking around the idea of spending your retirement driving around in an RV. And mention it’s important that you want to have their input since it will be their new home as well. I can assure you, that their declaration of “getting my own place soon” will stop being talk and start being action. I think you will be an empty nester again in no time! This is in no way a reflection of RV’s or people who love them. I have already said how much I think of RV’s. It is just  fabulous leverage you can garner by attending one of these shows if you happen to have “temporary” housemates. You know the “two birds with one stone” idea. So as always, my job here is to give you an idea of what is going on around the U.S. this week. Check the search box above for shows taking place in your backyard.
