If it Floats, it Could be a Boat!

Wooden Luxury Tender at Monaco

Do you know the difference between a “boat” and “ship”? I do, I think. A few years ago, I was told, when I incorrectly referred to a cruise liner as a “boat,” that there is a very distinct difference. It is simple; a ship is something that is big enough to carry a boat. Although I didn’t really want to enter into a long discussion, I did find that a little too simple. For one reason I was never really sure what constituted a “boat”. Is there a difference when you have a fishing boat (notice I said boat) and it carries a small dingy, does that make the fishing boat a fishing ship? It is just too confusing for me, especially when I get to a boat show. I mean it says “boat” show in the name right? So how come some of these look like they could carry 2 or 3 boats on them. This is especially true of what are known as “In-Water” boat shows. For the sake of our discussion and the fact that this weeks’ shows are all indoor, we will skip the “in-water” category.

Boats or ships are something I really like to see on display. I don’t live in the luxury world of yachts and I don’t fish as much these days as I did years ago so looking at boats at the shows is really fun for me. Everything showcased on the floor is all new and clean.  And an added bonus is that nothing smells like fish, yet. Well, if the show has one of those giant fish tanks where you can try out new fishing rods, then that might actually smell like fish.  But overall you get to walk around beautiful boats and find out what’s new in the fishing and boating industry. And just like the bridal shows last week and the RV shows the week before, it may not be exactly something that you will ever need or buy, but it can still be really fun.

So in this delightfully cold weather, when water sports can be a distant memory boat shows are the order of the day. Why not head on over to one near you? Grab the rug rats and landlubbers lying around your house and head out onto the snowy roads. A little summer time sneak peak might be just the excursion you need this weekend. I am positive that a great many readers will be unable to attend these exact shows on this list due to geographic restrictions, but there are still plenty of boat shows going on all over. Just use the search box above and find out what shows are sailing into your area this week.
