TRICK-OR-TROUBLE: 10 HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

Halloween

It’s not just the trick or treating that makes Halloween fun for me – it’s also my birthday! My husband is one of the few men that can say he’s married to a real “witch” and get away with it!

As a child, I spent my birthdays trick or treating; and as an adult walking with the kids as they went door-to-door. The number one rule for us was only going to houses that had their lights on.

Well, times have definitely changed and I want to share some safety tips with you that you may have not considered.

  1. When picking a costume with a mask check the following:
  • Can you easily see out of it?
  • Can it be quickly removed?
  • Is it well ventilated for easy breathing?
  1. Does your costume have a bottom?
  • Is it easy to walk in?
  • If it’s adult costume, can you drive in it?
  1. Before you head out knocking on doors take time to check the national sex offender registry for your neighborhood.
  • Most local city & county agencies have this information available.
  • Avoid these homes
  • If you know a home is registered to a sex offender & they have lights on and decorations out, report them to local authorities immediately!
  1. Parents always carry a flashlight & peppers spray with you.
  2. If kids are uncomfortable going to a house because it looks too spooky, walk up with them.
  3. Never enter anyone’s home to accept candy even if it’s just for a minute. Always wait outside.
  1. Respect people’s personal space and don’t let anyone within your personal space.
    • Just because it’s Halloween doesn’t mean it’s ok to walk up to just anyone.
    • If you are uncomfortable be sure to keep your distance or ask that person to step back.
  1. Be mindful/respectful of what time it is.
    • If it’s 10:00 pm & the trick or treaters are long gone, don’t open your door to a random.
  1. ALWAYS walk in groups or pairs. It’s never safe to walk alone.
  2. Check all candy/items before eating them.
  • Only eat factory wrapped candy.
  • If a piece of candy looks questionable, throw it away!

10 Hollywood Home Births

Screen-Shot-2014-09-16-at-9.07.01-AM

By Jenny Schafer

Hollywood is having a baby boom. And some of our favorite celebrity moms are welcoming their babies at home.

While home births still constitute less than 1 percent of total births in the United States, births at home have increased 50 percent since 2004, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Continue reading about 10 celebrity moms – including Cindy Crawford, Alyson Hannigan and Gisele Bündchen  – who had home births.

  • Stacy Keibler:

Supermarket Superstar host Stacy Keibler and her husband Jared Pobre welcomed their first child on August 20, she announced on her website. The Dancing with the Stars alum welcomed daughter, Ava Grace, via home birth.

“Jared and I have been blessed with the new love of our lives,” the proud new mom announced. “Ava Grace Pobre was born at home on Wednesday, August 20th. We’ve never experienced a level of joy and happiness like this before! Thank you so much for all of the special wishes and positive energy.”

  • Omarion’s girlfriend Apryl Jones:

Former B2K singer Omarion, 29, and his girlfriend Apryl Jones have welcomed their first child – a son – the proud papa announced via Instagram August 9. “World. Allow me to introduce. MEGAA OMARI GRANDBERRY. He is 7 pounds. 4oz & 20 inches long,” he captioned the sweet snapshot holding his newborn in his arms.

“My son I’ve been waiting on you,” the R&B singer continued.

The new dad went on to gush about his “soul mate,” who welcomed their son via home birth.

“God is the realist!! I witnessed a miracle,” he added. “My soul mate @aprylsjones is so strong! Not only did she have a un medicated birth (no drugs) she did it at home. Naturally. Just like my mom had me. I love you. thank you for having my legacy. I’ll forever belong to you & you will forever be tied to me. Creating a child takes no love or skill but being a parent requires lots of both. Thanks for watching me grow. #MEGAAhome #OmarionsonMEGAA #donthateonmysonsnameillkillya #Nolol #royalObloodline #blasain #mysongotgoodhair #freshpitthewombhandsom alright. I love y’all.”

  • Thandie Newton:

During an appearance on TODAY, Rogue actress Thandie Newton talked about the joys of home birth. The mom-of-three proudly said she birthed her son Booker, now 6 months, at home on her bathroom floor.

When asked why she had all three of her kids at home – she and husband Ol Parker are also parents to daughters Ripley, 13, and Nico, 9 – the Mission: Impossible II actress said she feels much more comfortable at home.

“I’d never been in hospital as a child or as an adult really, and I just associated hospital with being ill,” she said of her decision. “And I felt beautiful and healthy and wonderful when I was pregnant, and being at home was the place I felt most relaxed and comfortable.”

She went on to talk about the taboo topic, saying that home births used to be the norm.

“There was a time when everyone had their babies at home,” the Crash star, 41, said. “It wasn’t such a big deal. It’s more about as a woman what do you feel most comfortable doing, and you make the choice, and I chose to be at home.”

  • Alyson Hannigan:

Alyson Hannigan has quickly become one of our favorite celebrity moms since the birth of her first child, Satyana, in March 2009. Celebrity Baby Scoop sat down with the How I Met Your Mother star and asked about her drug-free homebirth.

“Yes. I did use a midwife and a doula,” she said. “We had the option of having a doctor there, but even he said you’ll only need me if you need to be transferred to the hospital–which thankfully, I did not need.”

Before welcoming her second daughter, Keeva, the American Pie star said she faced many fear-based comments about going forward with another home birth.

“Yes, we had lots of comments about it,” Alyson said. “And we had the doctor that scared us tremendously. There was definitely more concern the first time around. For me, that was just the perfect place. I am absolutely terrified of hospitals. so I think that the home is the best place for me to feel comfortable. I had a midwife, her assistant and a doula. It will be the same again this time.”

  • Mayim Bialik:

Mayim Bialik has really ‘blossomed’ into an amazing and outspoken mother! An advocate of attachment parenting, Mayim also empowers women to consider medication-free home births.

The Big Bang Theory star and mother of two talked about her second son’s home birth, while her elder son watched.

“Fred, yes, was born at home, and Miles was able to watch the whole thing from his high chair while eating granola,” she said. “Fortunately it was a very fast labor because I think Miles would’ve been bored if it was longer than the hour and a half it was. He loves it, he still talks about it. It was something we talked about with our pediatrician, and believed very strongly in older siblings being present, and giving the choice. We gave him a choice before, we prepared him with videos about homebirth that our midwife prepared. Even during, I said, “If Miles wants to go the next room he can!” But he said, “No, I fine!” He got freaked out by the blood, but it was still nice.”

  • Alanis Morissette:

On Christmas Day 2011, Alanis Morissette and her husband Mario Treadway welcomed their son Ever into their home with the help of a midwife and a doula.

“I didn’t really even imagine myself having the birth experience in the hospital,” Morissette told Today. “My home is like my little sanctuary.”

She added: “My husband was at my side the whole time, my total hero. And the rest was really up to God.”

Throughout her home birth, the singer says she tapped into an inner strength.

“The experience was beyond pain,” she admitted. “It was a transcendental experience. I just went to this whole other world. I basically had to be the little soldier that I am and really focus on this new beautiful creature coming out of me.”

She went on to talk about the joys of home birth.

“I think once people know it’s quite possible to have a really amazing home birth — and in my case I have no regrets and would do it again and in the same breath it wasn’t the easiest experience of my life — I think having it be an option is really exciting,” she shared.

  • Gisele Bündchen:

One of the most outspoken celebrity moms on natural birth is supermodel Gisele Bündchen. The former Victoria’s Secret model gave birth to her first child Benjamin in December 2009 and has openly spoken about her drug-free and pain-free home water birth.

“My delivery was in a bath tub, in water,” Gisele said. “I wanted to have a home birth. I wanted to be very aware and present during the birth… I didn’t want to be drugged up. So I did a lot of preparation, I did yoga and meditation, so I managed to have a very tranquil birth at home. It didn’t hurt in the slightest. The whole time my mind was focused in each contraction on the thought ‘my baby is closer to coming out.’”

A few weeks later the supermodel looked svelte on the cover of Vogue and spoke of her “empowered” birth experience.

“I wanted to experience the transformation,” the model mom said. “It was the most amazing experience of my life, feeling him come through my body. And once he was born, I never felt so empowered as looking at him and thinking, Oh, my God, we did it together!”

The Brazilian beauty later wrote on her blog:

“I am blessed to have been able to have a home birth surrounded by love, where I was able to feel safe,” she wrote. “It was a powerful experience. I never felt so vulnerable but so strong at the same time. It was amazing to experience my body become free to do what it was made to do by allowing my mind and my body to let go and be free to experience the changes taking place within… I was just there… focusing on my breathing and relaxing the best that I could… so present, to witness the biggest miracle in my life happen before my very own eyes. To give life to another being, what a gift!”

As well, Gisele added her voice to the Birth Around the World Project to help promote the humanization of birth.

“I had the opportunity to experience the natural process of birth and it was one of the most life changing experiences for me and very very special!,” she said. “I believe it’s a woman’s right to make the decision about how she’s going to give birth to her child. And it’s also her right to have access to the information she needs so she can make that decision from a place of awareness, and not a place of fear.”

  • Evangeline Lilly

Lost star Evangeline Lilly welcomed son Kahekili Kali in May 2011 and shared her birth story.

“I actually skipped the hospital … We decided to have the baby at home because we wanted it to be a natural birth, and it turns out that it was 30 hours of natural,” she shared.

Of those thirty hours, Evangeline says a full eight were spent pushing!

“Eight hours of pushing, that’s the part that men don’t understand.” the Canadian beauty added. “Women go, ‘Oh, dear, oh, dear God, eight hours of pushing?’ And the men are like, ‘Okay, eight hours of pushing. After about five hours of pushing, my midwife and my birthing assistant said, ‘You know, we have a few suggestions,’” she says. “And I was like, ‘Really? After five hours of pushing you have a few suggestions? You couldn’t have told me five minutes in?’

  • Ricki Lake

Ricki Lake’s documentary about home birth, The Business of Being Born, empowered women everywhere to have unmedicated births at home. She gave birth to her second son Owen, now 13, at home in a bathtub. She talked about her reasons for making the film.

“I wanted to make this movie after my two very different birth experiences with my children,” she said. “I felt like I had an opportunity to explore and question birthing practices in this country and perhaps be an advocate for mothers’ rights and better maternity care.”

On the experience of birthing Owen at home, Ricki said:

“After the birth of my sons, particularly my home birth with my second son, I thought I wanted to become a midwife,” she shared. “Then I looked at all the years of schooling and training that I would have to do and felt that the time could be better spent doing a documentary on the subject of birth.”

  • Cindy Crawford:

Model mom-of-two Cindy Crawford had both of her children – son Presley and daughter Kaia – at home with her husband Rande Gerber and three midwives on hand.

She spoke of the home birth experience:

“I didn’t tell anyone last time because a lot of people are against home birth and tell you horror stories,” she shared. “Even my husband said at first, ‘Why are we doing this?’” But she went on to say her home birth was ‘absolutely surreal.’”

How to Recycle Your House

seigelsburn

I want to share a special story, about my dearest friend and BFF Lynn, her husband Rob, and their 3 children, who live in the town of Katonah, New York. Theirs is a tale about mindfulness, giving back, and recycling…

I have known Lynn for more then half my life. We attended graduate school together many, many years ago and Lynn and I were roommates in New York City in our “wild and crazy” single years, after graduate school and before marriage, houses and kids. Lynn has always been a “go-getter” and a planner. Lynn is a person who is able to figure things out and make them happen when others can’t, she is also someone who stands up to adversity and doesn’t let it slow her down. Lynn will never ever say “no,” or “it can’t be done;” she always figures out a way.

Twin_Towers-NYC
For years, Lynn and Rob (and especially Rob who is an architect) have planned and dreamed of building a unique, safe and special home; a place to build memories, and raise their family. In fact, I have listened to Rob and Lynn talk about this with ernest, since 2001, when they were forced from their home in New York City, which was damaged in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Lynn and her young daughters were bravely rescued and evacuated from their apartment in Battery Park City, directly across the street from where the World Trade Center buildings fell. This fact is
an important one, for later on in Lynn and Rob’s story.

It took Lynn and Rob a number of years and some moving around before they found the perfect property and the spot where they could envision building the home that their family would live, grow and make memories in.

Rob, founder of Robert Siegel Architects, had a real vision for the perfect home for his family that would showcase his design style as well as the lifestyle his family leads.

The property couldn’t sustain two homes, nor was this a practical option. So, while Rob was busy designing their new home, Lynn – who is the founder of Charity Panda and an involved parent closely connected to her community – went to work figuring out how to “give away” their old home. This idea, in fact was Lynn’s first thought. As their house was a perfectly good structure, she felt strongly that another family should and could benefit from it. Lynn tried for months to figure out a way to have the home moved to a location and place where another family could use it. This idea isn’t unheard of, and does occasionally happen. But in Katonah and it’s neighboring communities,
with their overhead power wires, and narrow country roads, this move proved to be impossible. Lynn, who never gives up, really, really tried to make it happen; but it wasn’t to be.

Lynn’s next idea was to donate everything in the home that could be removed, down to the frame of the house; a significant, time consuming, but incredibly worthwhile “recycling” project. Lynn ended up teaming up with A-Home, a local Westchester
charity that is committed to providing affordable housing to seniors and disabled individuals. Again, over a number of months, with close involvement and oversight from Lynn, A-Home removed many items from Lynn and Rob’s home, that could be useful to their clients in both the short and long term. This includes things like: cabinetry, plumbing, mechanical systems, appliances, and furniture.

From my vantage point, (and I know from Lynn’s) this was a wonderful and important project to teach life lessons to Lynn’s children – Lucy, Molly and Cody – and also to share these lessons with many of their family friends on how to “give back.” We live in such a “throw away” society, where many people have so much more then they can use, and sadly many others simply don’t have enough, even in a country like ours. The old adage, “one person’s garbage is another’s treasure” too often gets forgotten. But this is something that was not forgotten by Lynn and her family. In this case, with some careful planning, perfectly usable items were put to good use, by people who needed them. Unfortunately, in most instances, most people don’t take this “extra step” and usable items often simply end up in landfills.

As part of the US Green Building Council’s “LEED” program, you are encouraged to use, recycle or re-purpose as much as you can. Lynn and Rob took care of this task, with thoughtfulness and to the best of their abilities. “Out of sight, out of mind” is how
many of us feel about what goes into our trash. Yet landfills are “filling up” around our country at an incredibly fast rate. As many of our Climate Mamas and Papas may know, landfills also are a significant source of methane emissions, one of the most potent greenhouse gases that contribute to our changing climate.

Katonah Fire Department Live Burn Training

For the final step, Lynn let herself go back and remember, what still and will always be a painful and difficult memory, the events of September 11th, 2001. Lynn came up with a creative way to “give back” and honor the men and women who were her shinning light in what was one of her darkest days. Lynn reached out to the Katonah Fire Department who organized, along with several other neighboring fire departments, training days, to use Lynn and Rob’s home for valuable search and rescue training. After several weeks, the training culminating in burning down the house! The chance to practice, in a real home, in a simulated emergency situation, is a very rare and useful learning opportunity.

Katonah Fire Department Live Burn Training

And as only Lynn can, she turned the final “burn down” as well as the search and rescue days into parties – creating memories for not just her family, but many others in her community (including in fact Martha Stewart, who is one of Lynn and Rob’s neighbors!) Lynn served hot chocolate and cookies to all, and offered her friends and neighbors the rare chance to watch and cheer on our first responders – incredibly brave men and women – who help us at our greatest times of need. It was also a chance to explain more about how and why they chose to “recycle” their house.

I am so pleased to be able to tell this story, and have the opportunity to publicly and loudly thank Lynn, Rob, Lucy, Molly and Cody for sharing their experiences with us. They have created an incredible example of how, with some effort, giving back and “recycling” – important things to do on so many levels – can also serve as memorable and important learning opportunities!

Yours,

Climate Mama

Earth Day: 3 Eco-Friendly Celebrity Moms

ecomoms

By: CelebrityBabyScoop

Hollywood is going green!

On April 22, more than one billion people around the globe will participate in Earth Day. From Gisele Bündchen to Jessica Alba, let’s take a look at three green celebrity moms who inspire others to protect Mother Nature.

◦   Jessica Alba:

Actress Jessica Alba and husband Cash Warren are parents to two daughters: Honor, 5½ and Haven, 2½.

Shortly after her second daughter arrived, the Fantastic Four star partnered with Christopher Gavigan, dad-of-two and founder of Healthy Child Healthy World, to create The Honest Company, an online source to purchase eco-friendly baby/kid products.

The Sin City actress opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about how she encourages her girls to minimize their carbon footprint.

“First and foremost, we try to model and practice eco-friendly habits for the girls,” she shared. “Otherwise, we talk to them about being mindful and explain that things can be turned into something else one day. This can be as simple as teaching them about recyclables and showing how to sort bottles and cans from trash.”

She added: “We also do a lot of DIY crafts like using cardboard boxes to make airplanes and dollhouses—our creative playtime together similarly shows the girls about repurposing old items.”

The mom-of-two is all about living eco-friendly on a daily basis.

“Involving children in gardening and cooking is another great way to inspire eco-friendly living,” she said. “Caring for the plants in our herb wall garden helps Honor understand the steps to growing food (including patience!), how it ultimately lands on her plate, and about being a good steward of the planet.”

“Honor is also a great sous chef when we’re in the kitchen, so being a part of the dinner process encourages her to eat the foods she grows and develops her taste for fresh ingredients,” she continued. “Hopefully, this lays the foundation for children to prioritize their health and that of the planet.”

◦   Alicia Silverstone:

Alicia Silverstone is one outspoken green mama!

The actress caused quite a stir with a video that went viral. The Clueless star was seen feeding her then- 11-month-old son Bear Blu mouth-to-mouth on her eco-friendly blog The Kind Life.

She wrote: “I just had a delicious breakfast of miso soup, collards and radish steamed and drizzled with flax oil, cast iron mochi with nori wrapped outside, and some grated daikon. Yum! I fed Bear the mochi and a tiny bit of veggies from the soup…from my mouth to his. It’s his favorite…and mine.”

Alicia and her husband Christopher Jarecki live in a Los Angeles home with solar panels and an organic vegetable garden. The actress is an advocate for animal rights and environmental issues and became a vegan in 1998. She shares her eco-friendly tips on her official website.

“The Kind Life is an interactive extension of my book, “The Kind Diet”, which is about living your healthiest and happiest life to the fullest, while taking care of mama Earth at the same time!,” Alicia writes on her blog. “The site is whatever you make of it; whether it’s joining the many others who are on this same journey or simply visiting to gather information and other tips. Whatever you need, you will find it here. I will be sharing all kinds of tasty morsels with you; from fashion and beauty tips, to simple ways that we can help the planet! By the time you’re done with your visit, your mouth will be watering and you will surely want to crash here forever. So come on in, kick off your shoes and check out all sorts of recipes, my favorite foods, nutritional information from doctors that are in the book, the very best restaurants, amazing travel discoveries, party planning tips, ways to make sure your house is as healthy and green as possible, great pet care tips, and so much more.”

Alicia is also vocal about elimination communication, the eco-friendly potty training technique coined by Ingrid Bauer, author of Diaper Free! The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene.

“When Bear Blu was 5-months-old,” the proud mama tweeted, “[S]aturday bear blu went poo and pee on toilet 4x throughout the day…we were so proud! “Check out book Diaper Free..soo fun!” The actress added, “yesterday bear did 2 poops in toilet….so sweet! i’m saving so many diapers…even cloth ones….yahoooo! and it’s so fun!”

◦   Gisele Bündchen:

Supermodel mom Gisele Bündchen has long been an advocate of going green. The Brazilian beauty says that her children – Benjamin, 4, Vivian, 1, and 6-year-old stepson Jack – have made the importance of the message really hit home.

“I had my first munchkin, Jack (husband Tom Brady’s son with Bridget Moynahan), before I gave birth to Benjamin,” Gisele said. “After spending so much time with Jack I saw how he wanted to play with the stuff I was using instead of the toys we bought him. In terms of clothes, I bought Jack so many clothes and am now using them for Benjamin. Look, when I was growing up my sisters and I wore hand-me-downs and am now doing the same thing. This all goes back to my motto: Reduce, recycle and reuse. The more we buy the more we encourage the manufacturers to produce more stuff.”

Also a fan of elimination communication, Gisele said Benjamin was potty trained at 6-months-old! How did she do it?

The model mom said that her son was on a schedule including breastfeeding in the morning and afternoon, promptly followed by a bowel movement, making it easy for her to put him on the toilet and eliminate the use of a diaper. Of the process she said,

“Give it about five minutes, and bang,” admitting with a laugh that she realizes the process is actually, “more complicated.”

Avoid The Mid-Winter Blues

It’s usually during the month of February when you start to feel those mid-winter blues; the kids start to go a little stir-crazy and you feel a case of cabin fever coming on fast. Well, I’m here to help you avoid the mid-winter blues and to embrace the remainder of winter – with your whole family.

Take a Vacation: Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about an expensive last-minute trip to Mexico (unless you want to go)! A simple road trip to a slightly warmer location and a stay in a hotel with a pool is all you likely need to feel rejuvenated enough to make it through the last month of winter. I suggest taking a weekend – or a long weekend if possible – and making a break for blue skies and sunshine. Your kids will enjoy frolicking in the pool and drinking smoothies while you relax under the sun.

Head to an Indoor Aquatic Center:  My kids and I have a blast at the local indoor aquatic center! It’s always warm inside the center, and swimming always reminds us of the upcoming spring and summer. Find an aquatic center that is child-friendly and includes features like: a shallow pool, a lazy river, water slides and more. Your kids will appreciate that the outing is kid-friendly and you’re guaranteed to smile and have fun splashing around by their sides as well.

Take Advantage of Winter Activities: Remind yourself that winter is nearing an end and take advantage of winter activities offered within your area. In most places, you can only sled, ski and ice skate for a few months of every year, so take advantage of the winter you’re having and get out there and play. There are lots of kid-friendly winter activities that adults enjoy, too.

Indoor Activities Are Fun: Yes, you’ve been indoors for far too long now (or so it would seem), but you’re likely stuck in a routine and have been enjoying lots of the same activities. Now is the time to branch out and try a new activity like: building an indoor fort, getting a craft kit and making something special, trying a science experiment at home, etc. Get creative and do something new indoors!

Beat those mid-winter blues with these mid-winter tips, ideas and activities.

Have fun and happy parenting!

Sincerely,

Daddy Nickell

Gwen Stefani’s Top 10 Maternity Looks

gwen_mat_style

By: Celebrity Baby Scoop

It’s not often that we choose one celebrity to showcase their maternity style. But when it comes to Gwen Stefani, it’s a no-brainer.

From chic tunics and leggings, to statement jackets and heels, to glam red carpet gowns, the No Doubt frontwoman, 44, has been knocking our socks off with her outstanding ensembles.

Let’s take a look at Gwen’s top 10 maternity looks – so far – while expecting her third son with husband Gavin Rossdale.

While we were still speculating her pregnancy in early September, Gwen donned a shredded tank while out and about in Studio City, Calif., giving us a peekaboo look at her possible baby bump.

In late September (still during the baby bump speculation), the Spiderwebs singer stepped out with 5-year-old son Zuma in Yorba Linda, Calif. Sporting black leggings, heels, and a stylish long top hiding her growing belly, Gwen was all smiles as she headed to a baby shower with her youngest son.

In mid-October, Gwen radiated the red carpet at the Wallis Annenberg Center For The Performing Arts Inaugural Gala in Beverly Hills, Calif. Accompanied by her husband of 11 years, rocker Gavin Rossdale, the Cool singer dressed her growing baby bump in a floor-length Ferragamo dress with fringe detail.

In early November, the expectant mama looked simply radiant as she headed into a baby shower in Los Feliz, Calif. Joined by her hubby, the No Doubt frontwoman wore a printed maxi maternity dress paired with a floral headpiece.

Gwen was simply glowing while dropping off her son Zuma at school in Studio City, Calif. in early November. Dressing her growing baby bump in a loose-fitting gray top, plaid jacket, skinny jeans and heels, the Just a Girl singer looked chic as always.

In mid-November, Gwen and Gavin stepped out in Los Angeles, Calif. The expectant parents were seen in Chinatown before visiting an office in Studio City. The stylish mom-to-be kept cozy in a Seraphine Shakira Double Zip Wool Maternity Coat during their outing.

Gwen and Gavin were spotted with their two sons –Kingston, 7, and Zuma, 5 – in Hollywood, Calif. in late November. Joined by the family pooch, the group were seen arriving at Gwen’s parents’ home to celebrate Thanksgiving. Dressed in a red coat to match her signature lips, the No Doubt frontwoman accessorized with black leggings, boots, bag and shades.

The expectant mama stepped out in style in early December while lunching with No Doubt bandmate Tony Kanal at Crossroads Vegan restaurant in West Hollywood, Calif. Looking simply radiant in an all black outfit, Gwen accessorized her chic ensemble with a white coat and red boots.

Dressed in matching black and white outfits, Gwen and her sons Kingston and Zuma stepped out for Christmas Eve mass in Los Angeles, Calif. While the singer wore a monochromatic maternity dress to church, the boys donned dapper striped pants and matching bow ties.

The expectant mama shared a super-chic selfie via Twitter. “bump it #allblack #inappropriateshoes #capturethemoment #miracle,” Gwen captioned her pregnant pose in late January. Looking simply radiant, the soon-to-be mom-of-three posed in front of a mirror with her iPhone, showing off her burgeoning belly in a form-fitting black Seraphine tunic over black leggings.

While Gwen gives us so many stunning ensembles to choose from, which is your favorite maternity look so far?

A Full Stage of Events This Week

af_clowns

When I say stage here I mean a metaphorical stage; this blog, which is a showcase of the events of the week. It is winter, it is cold and we just found out, from the famous Pennsylvania groundhog, we can expect 6 more weeks of winter. So it’s great for everyone that this week I researched events and came up with some wonderful, big events in a variety of categories and venues.

Variety and choice seem to be in short supply this time of year so let’s take this opportunity to make the most of it. Typically this time of year, boat, RV, camping and home shows are the largest variety. Oh we still see plenty of those types of shows but as we move into February we can select from a much broader pool. This week features a car show, travel show, a garlic festival, a gourd festival, an art event, a parade, a state fair, a winter carnival, a craft show, a chocolate event and even Chinese New Year. That is a potpourri of options for sure.

Knowing these facts, I now invite you to dig a little deeper, to search a little longer and to not be discouraged thinking that you need to settle for the same old indoor show. Check out some of these categories and see if you can find some in your area as well. Whatever you find, make it a family day. Look over the choices and find one just perfect for your group. Grab the kids, the neighbors and their kids and Old Uncle Bert and head on out to a terrific event this week. If you look closely at this list, I bet you can figure out what category of event I will be attending this week. (That was just way too easy) Whatever you and your pals decide to do, make sure to make the most of it and have fun!

A Look At 5 Winter Olympic Parents

olympic_parents

By: Celebrity Baby Scoop

With the Sochi Winter Games commencing on February 6th, we’re getting into the Olympic spirit.

We’re taking a look at 5 past and present winter Olympic parents, including hockey stars Mike Smith and Jenny Schmidgall-Potter, and controversial figure skater Tonya Harding.

◦   Mike Smith:

Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith is headed to Sochi to represent his home country, Canada. But the hockey star, 31, will not be bringing his young family due to the recent threats and terrorist attacks in the region.

“Me having two young kids, my wife’s also expecting number three, they’re not going to go. It’s not worth it,” the NHL star told CBC. “It’s not worth it for myself, thinking about is she okay whenever I’m not with her. It’s something that’s unfortunate but that’s just how it is.”

Mike’s wife is fellow Olympian, Canadian Alpine skier Brigitte Acton.

◦   Scott Hamilton:

Father of sons Aidan, 10, and Maxx, 6, former Olympian Scott Hamilton will be in Sochi as a figure skating analyst for NBC. The 1984 champ, 55, makes light of his “unique hobby of collecting life-threatening illnesses,” including testicular cancer and a recurrent benign brain tumor.

“I left home at 13. I have two sons,” Scott told Parade. “I’m not capable of letting them leave because I feel like I missed that time with my parents. My mother died when I was 19. It’s like, ‘No, I’m not going to sacrifice that time.’”

◦   Kristi Yamaguchi:

Also a Dancing with the Stars champ, Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi is now raising two daughters – Keara, 10, and Emma, 8 – with husband and former Olympic hockey player Bret Hedican. She will be in Sochi as the U.S. Olympic committee’s digital ambassador.

“I am very excited about the upcoming Olympics in Sochi,” Kristi told Celebrity Baby Scoop in August. “I don’t think my children will go, because it is such a far trip to take during the school year.”

On the controversy surrounding the Winter Games in Russia, Kristi said: “When I think of the Olympics, I think of everyone coming together in peace and competing in goodwill and good sport. I hope that everyone is able to do that as well. It’s all about these amazing athletes who have worked their entire lives to showcase their dreams. I’ll be cheering for all the athletes!”

◦   Tonya Harding:

Former Olympian Tonya Harding was involved in one of the most shocking winter sport scandals of all time.

Two decades ago, her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly hired a man to break Nancy’s leg making it impossible for her compete against Tonya in the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit.

“I don’t care,” Tonya recently told Access Hollywood when asked if she’s bothered by the public’s opinion of her. “Everybody is entitled to their opinion; it was 20 years ago. [Gillooly and I] both have gone our separate ways. Get over it, okay? Its 20 years. I’m sure that she’s done and I am, too.”

On her life now, Tonya says she’s loving being a “mommy.”

“I’m married and I have a son… I wasn’t supposed to have children, so my son is my miracle… I love being a mommy and I like to do landscaping in the summertime, and then I kind of do these fire starters where I dip pinecones in scented wax,” she shared.

◦   Jenny Schmidgall-Potter:

Gold medal Olympic hockey player, Jenny Schmidgall-Potter, is proud mom to daughter Maddy, 12, and son Cullen, 6. The 35-year-old hockey star opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about how her family keeps her grounded.

“I don’t really have a mantra but I do believe in hard work,” Jenny said. “I think being the best you can be and trying to be one of the best players in the world keeps me focused and that my family is there is share it with me.”

Routine Tips that Work

When you have children you know the importance of a good routine. Children thrive on routine and they’ll come to appreciate it greatly, but it’s not always easy to establish a routine at home. With seven children of my own, I have tried it all, and I have come to figure out tips that help build and establish a routine.

And without further adieu, here they are:

  1.  Consistency – Write down your desired routine and complete it consistently, as a family, everyday for a week. The first week might be difficult, but don’t give up – be consistent. At the end of the week you’ll be able to make changes and modifications where necessary, and you’ll likely be surprised by how well your family has taken to the routine. After the first week it’s all downhill! Things to ensure are part of the routine include: a designated wake up time and bedtime, hygiene schedules, healthy meals, family time, play time, down time and school.
  2. Communication – Talk about the routine everyday in order to make sure all family members are on the same page. Let your family add to the conversation in discussing what they like, what they don’t like, what works well, what doesn’t and why. Finding a routine that works for everyone is key to the success of your routine. So give every family member a chance to communicate in order to be sure everyone’s needs are being met by the routine you’ve created.
  3. Organization – Be as organized as you can when it comes to your routine. Make sure homework is complete in the evenings, projects are ready for transport to the car before going to bed, everyone has what they need to leave the house, etc. We use a large family calendar wherein we write in big projects, happenings and the daily schedule of activities as well as a large white board where we write important reminders, so we don’t let anything fall through the cracks or ruin our routine.
  4. Schedule – In our home, everyone looks at the calendar, discusses it, adds to it, and talks about their day, after school events, upcoming weekend events, family nights, and after school sports. Use a calendar and teach your children how to use it, too. If they know what the calendar means they’ll likely ask you to add their important events, activities and ideas to it. Don’t forget to allow time in the schedule for bumps in the road. Your routine might be bumpy every other day, and it’s important to plan time for those bumps in the schedule and make room for adjustments, too.

I know routines have the tendency to be rigid, but you can’t forget to have fun – be a family, be supportive, be funny, smile; life is short, enjoy the moments of chaos, and grow together.

Teaching Kids to Resist Peer Pressure

Peer pressure can start at a young age and often begins simply and seemingly harmless, but it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Parents need to work with their young children to teach them ways in which they can resist peer pressure.

With seven kids of my own, I’ve discovered several great ways to do just that.

Be Yourself: Children often succumb to peer pressure because they’re afraid to say no or to be themselves. We need to teach children that’s it’s perfectly okay to be different; we all don’t need to fit into one mold. When a child is comfortable in their own skin they’ll be more prepared to resist peer pressure. It’s not easy to teach a child that it’s okay to be different or to go against the grain, and it’s really a lesson that you’ll have to continue to teach as your child grows and encounters new difficulties and life experiences. Make sure your child knows you think the world of them and that you’re proud to be their parent; building them up will instill confidence, which will help them understand that they don’t need to change who they are to “fit-in” or “be cool”.

Reflect Often: Another important lesson parents need to teach children is to be reflective and to not make rash or rushed decisions. A reflective child will be less likely to be peer pressured into doing something risky or irresponsible, because they’ll take the time to weigh the pros and cons and seriously think about the best option or decision. Start young by discussing aloud with your child pros and cons of various and everyday activities, so they get into the habit of thinking things through. Instilling a sense of reflection can do wonders when it comes to helping children resist peer pressure.

Set a Good Example: I say it all the time, and I’ll say it again now: your kids are watching and learning from your every move. If you’re peer pressured into doing something you didn’t necessarily want to do they’ll be watching you and learning that it’s okay to succumb to peer pressure. Set a strong example, be a good role model and show your children that saying no in the face of peer pressure is perfectly acceptable.

Communicate: Solid communication between parent and child is extremely important. A relationship rich in communication will allow a parent to better understand their child. Furthermore, a child will likely be more open about any peer pressures they may be facing if they’re given the opportunity to express themselves freely and safely. The parent will then be able to step in and give their child techniques to resist peer pressure.

Teaching ways to resist peer pressure should begin at a young age. Start small and don’t give up.

Happy parenting!

Sincerely,

Daddy Nickell
